Real Food Real Frugal Review and Giveaway

I was recently given the opportunity to review a brand new book by Susan Godfrey, Real Food Real Frugal, and I must say that I am in love!  Truly her book is a great first resource when you are deciding to make the switch to healthy, natural foods and to do so on a budget!

Just look at that cover, isn't it beautiful?  Just look at those gorgeous purple bell peppers, and those farm fresh eggs and milk!

In Real Food Real Frugal Susan first tells us what real foods are, and why we should be eating them, and where we should buy them (because location is important!).  Next she shares with us things that are not real food and why we should avoid them, and how to avoid them.  Following that she give us some great cost cutting tips on how to keep within a budget and eat quality foods, and let's be honest here who doesn't need this section?  The last section is dedicated to recipes that are healthy, inexpensive, and tasty!

What I loved most about this book is that it's written not to the health experts, but to the average individual who is trying to make good food choices for their family.  This book is a great starting point to know what to eat and why, and how to obtain it, and how to cook it!  In the book Susan says that eating real food is what she believes God intended for us to eat and I have to agree with her.  We need to be mindful of what we put into our bodies, and if it will give quality nourishment or if it will cause problems for the body that God has given us and commanded us to take care of!

Are you ready to join me on a quest for Real Food on a budget?  If so you can buy the book here and it is available in Kindle Edition, Nook Edition, or PDF Format.  If you'd like to win your own copy you may do so by entering the rafflecopter below!

Simply Eden Giveaway

Please welcome Savvy K to the Birbitt Thinks family!  She is bringing us a great review of Simply Eden products that you are sure to love! Everyone say hello to Savvy K!

Review by Real Reviews by Savvy K

Simply Eden Review/Giveaway 11/14 - 11/21

Real Reviews by Savvy K had the awesome chance to Review and Giveaway Simply Eden's Bath and Beauty products!
Simply Eden Bath and Beauty is a wonderful company that is focused on the best skin care for your body! Simply Eden products are handmade in Eden, Utah using quality ingredients without harsh chemicals. Goat milk is packed with vitamins and nutrients, leaving your skin soft and healthy without the stripping your skin's natural oils.
Simply eden also uses their own goat milk! Why goat-milk soap? Goat milk is packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and natural fats, including Vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, and Niacin. With a pH of around 6.4, goat milk is also similar to a normal skin pH of around 5.6, which makes for better skin tolerance. As soap is generally alkaline with even a mild soap having an alkalinity of 9.5-11, goat milk helps to also lower the pH of soap, which makes goat-milk soap a milder bar of soap for even the most sensitive of skin conditions. I love that on their website, you can view the goats as a live feed! To see the goats, you can view the live feed HERE(Goats may only be live when they are in the barn.)
Real Reviews by Savvy K had the chance to review a few of the Simply Eden products! Here is our review of each product!
The Apples & Oak Soap Bar was quite a treat! I loved that it was not overwhelming in the scent, but yet you could still pick up the apples and the woodsy scent. The bar made me feel very clean and nurished after using it! I have used this bar many times now and the scent never gets old, it is just enough to be recognized with out feeling like you are drowned in it! I also love how this soap lasts forever! I have used this bar numerous times and I can barely see a size difference from what it started out as! This bar is definetly on my list to buy for the holidays!
Now this has to be my favorite product that I had the chance to review! This Coconut Vanilla Body Mousse by Simply Eden is absoulutely divine! The scent is a perfect combination of vanilla and it's warm, sweet scent and the tropical scent of coconut! When combined together, you get this amazing lucious scent that I can't help but to use everyday! Don't let the vanilla throw you off, this body mousse does not have the overwhelming sweetness to it that you might think that a lot of other vanilla scented bath and body products have. This body mousse has moved to my number 1 favorite in lotions, body butter and mousses! I also love that this is not has heavy as most body butter's or lotions might be. The whipped texture is very light and soaks in your skin wonderfully!

Now just by listening to the name of this lotion, you would expect this really strong scent of peppermint that you might associate with a lot of foot lotions and balms. Let me tell you, that is so untrue. This lotion, if anything, as a subtle, elegant scent of peppermint with the bolder scent of grapefruit! I love it! The grapefruit and peppermint scent is delicate enough to use all over your body without feeling like you took a bath in it! The lotion itself also has a wonderful, light texture that makes it feel amazing on the skin. It also is packed with Peppermint, Oat Protein, and Green Tea Extract Essential Oils! This light, refreshing scented lotion is a must to give during this holiday season! I can guarantee that all of your loved ones will love it!

Simply Eden Candy Cane Body Mousse and Winter Wonderland Body Mousse
Simply Eden sent me two of their new products that are coming out for the holiday season! The Candy Cane Body mousse smells just like a candy cane! I love that the peppermint scent is bold and works great on my feet! I put this on at night on my feet and wake up the next morning with amazingly soft feet! The Winter Wonderland scent also is a great scent that is crisp and refreshing, with touch of warmth! If you want to try these divine scents, I suggest you hurry! These scents will only be available during the holidays!
Now for the best part! Real Reviews by Savvy K gets to giveaway away not one, but TWO Simply Eden products! Simply eden has graciously offered our readers to win a Sweet Orange Chili Pepper Body Mousseand a Sweet Orange Chili Pepper Soap Bar! These two zesty scented products can be yours! Let's Talk Water Bottles - Review

We all know that drinking pure water is good for us right?  I mean of course we do, since our bodies are about 70 percent water!  That means that the quality of the water we put in our bodies is important, but what we don't often realize is that the container you place your water in is just as important.

Plastics are potentially dangerous since the chemicals in the plastic can leech into your water and contaminate your pure water.  BPA free plastics are better, but still not perfect especially if the water is warm.  Aluminum isn't good since it is a toxic metal and the bottle must be then coated with a plastic "lining" which can erode over time and we won't even know it.  Stainless Steel is a really great choice, but we need to be careful of the quality of our stainless steel!

Enter Green Virgin Products! Yup, that's right the same great company that brought you soap nuts, all natural deodorant, and Peppermint and Moringa Soap is also bringing you high quality, stainless steel drinking bottles for water!  Not only are the bottles of the highest quality, but they are pretty too!  Also Green Virgin Products sells a neoprene sleeve for your water bottle to help keep the water cold longer, and to prevent the bottle from getting slippery from condensation!

Green Virgin sent me one of these awesome bottles in the 750ml size, along with a neoprene sleeve, for my review.

Now just look at that bottle, isn't it pretty?  I just love the slogan that Green Virgin Products uses "Because Our Children Deserve a Pristine Planet"!  See that clip on the right side?  You can use that to attach your bottle to your belt loop, or your backpack, or anywhere else that's convenient for you!  And it also has just under that clip a woven handle for easy carrying and holding.  This bottle is the perfect size for most people and uses, it is the most convenient size for carrying and holds about 25 ounces of water, which is great for a morning jog or a walk around the block, or just for an afternoon at the park!

Now I liked the bottle so well, that I just had to go and order even more!  Now I drink a TON of water, so I ordered myself the 1200ml bottle which holds about 40 ounces of water.  Here you can see the size difference, as well as what the bottle looks like without it's neoprene cover.

Now we have a complete family set, with sport bottle tops for the Birbitt Thinks kiddos, and regular tops for the adults.  These bottles will last us nearly forever, as they are sturdy and well made!  There is no aftertaste to our water and because they are stainless steel we are able to add our essential oils to our water for drinking!  Actually Mr. Birbitt Thinks has taken this bottle to work for his water every day, with the neoprene cover since he works with computers, and has decided it is much better than his  double walled cup and straw.

Now you can purchase your own here the smaller bottle is $8.95, the larger is $9.95 and the neoprene covers retail for $3.95.  These bottles have a lifetime guarantee against defects in manufacturing, and are a perfect choice for everyone in your home.  They even have a smaller baby sized bottle that is 350ml or about 11 ounces that would be perfect for small hands!

Birbitt thinks that Green Virgin Products has it right, and these stainless steel water bottles are great for everyday use!

Green Virgin Soap Nut and Moringa Soap Review

A few weeks back I did a review on Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts and Mineral Stick Deodorant, you all know I loved the products and so when I was asked to review some more Green Virgin Products I was thrilled!  I was sent an assortment of products and I will review them for you one at a time. The first product I want to tell you about is the Green Virgin Soap Nut and Moringa Peppermint Bar Soap.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the soap was the wonderful scent of peppermint!  It was a very uplifting and invigorating fragrance and I knew it was the perfect morning wake up call.  Once I removed the wrapper I was able to see the lovely dragonfly stamped into the soap, as well as all the little bitty bits of Moringa Leaf.  Aside from being real, honest soap which I love this soap is also great because it left my skin soft, and residue free as well as feeling fully moisturized and refreshed after my shower.  I found that when showering with this soap in the morning I was perky, and alert after my shower and that lasted all through my morning and into the afternoon.  I also found this soap to be gentle enough to use on my 3 year old, and he even liked the scent.

Now for those of you who don't know what Moringa is or why it's so good for you, you may read all about that here.  If you do know what is so awesome about Moringa, then you know why I love this soap! This soap is made with high quality, all natural ingredients.  The ingredients contained in Soap Nut and Moringa Peppermint Bar Soap are: Soap nuts liquid, Moringa leaf powder, Olive oil, Coconut oil, Palm kernel oil, Sunflower oil, Shea butter, Peppermint essential oil, and Sodium hydroxide.  How is that for a natural ingredient list?

Because this is a natural soap it does melt quickly in water so you must store it in a well draining soap dish.  Please do not use those decorative ones that simply hold water next to your soap, you will be greatly disappointed at how quickly your soap melts away in those.  Now I have some lovely wooden ones that drain the water away quickly, but if you don't already have a well draining soap dish Green Virgin Products Sells a very nice vertical soap dish that will keep your soap dry between uses to preserve it longer.

If you are looking for gift for the upcoming holiday season may I suggest this lovely gift set which contains Green Virgin Products' beautiful vertical soap dish as well as a bar of their wonderful soap!  It would make a great teacher or secretary gift, as well as something nice to give for a white elephant swap, or just a lovely little gift for friends and family!

Birbitt Thinks Green Virgin Products has truly proven their commitment to bringing high quality, safe, and natural products into your home.  It is because of this that Green Virgin Products has earned a spot in my own home, and I believe it should have a place in yours as well!

I received this product from Green Virgin Products in exchange for my honest review.  I was not required to write a positive review and was not compensated in any way other than the free product for my use.  Some links in this post may be affiliate links, and I receive a small commission from your purchase using those links.

The Original Dish Drying Mat Review

I was recently given the opportunity to try out The Original Dish Drying Mat from Influenster as part of the naturals Vox Box campaign and I must say it is simply perfect!

The options for drying hand washed dishes used to be pretty yucky, I mean you could leave them in the sink to dry (and possibly get dirty before getting put away), you could dry them all with a dish towel right away (takes too much time), you could set them on a tea towel to dry on the counter (can we say counter puddles), or you could use a dish draining rack (they get slimy and gross easily).  None of these worked well for me, and so I turned to my trusty dishwasher to get the job done.

Well I hate using my dishwasher because it uses too much water, the eco-friendly and chemical free detergent is expensive, the amount of electricity used to heat the water and run the machine (including the drying cycle) is just wasteful in my opinion, and often the dishes wouldn't come fully clean.  This is where The Original Dish Drying Mat comes in handy!  It absorbs 4 times it's weight in water, dries quickly, doesn't slide around on the counter, looks pretty, and best of all it's machine washable!  So I wash the dishes, lay them on the mat to dry, put them away and then hang the mat for drying and storage!

Now you tell me, what could be simpler?  This mat has made my family so happy, because now we have a perfect solution for drying our dishes!  I've had no need for the dishwasher since receiving The Original Dish Drying Mat, and my counter stays puddle free!  This mat is easy to use and store, and measures 18" by 16" and is large enough to accommodate our sink full of dishes.

You can visit The Original Dish Drying Mat on Facebook or their Website and you can purchase The Original Dish Drying Mat at Bed Bath and Beyond for only $4.99.  It comes in the original cream color, as well as a sage green, gray, and red to coordinate with your kitchen.  If you need a larger mat you can purchase the XL Dish Drying Mat which measures 18" by 24" and comes in cream, red and black.

Birbitt Thinks The Original Dish Drying Mat should be on every wedding registry, and in every kitchen!

Disclaimer: Birbitt Thinks was provided The Original Dish Drying Mat free of charge as part of Influenster Vox Box program, I was not required to write a review here on my blog and all opinions expressed are strictly my own!

Green Virgin Products review and giveaway

As part of our quest to eliminate toxins from our home I needed to change our deodorants. One reason is we were still using anti-perspirants which have aluminum in them and that is toxic to our bodies. For another even just plain deodorant has undesirable chemicals, which I would prefer to avoid. Now I have tried many natural deodorants in the past 8 months, none of which worked nearly as well as I liked. I mean sure they worked just fine if I was just in the house, but the minute I stepped out into the desert awaiting me on the other side of my front door the magic stopped.

Another large change that needed to be made was our laundry detergent, and let me tell you I've tried dozens of laundry solutions from making my own soap, to buying expensive natural detergents, to using soap-less washing methods. Again nothing was working for more than a few washes. Talk about frustrating!

Not only did I want a natural, non-toxic product but I also wanted a reasonable price tag.  This is where Green Virgin Products comes in!  They only sell all natural, eco friendly, and non toxic products for your home and body AND at the best possible price!  I was sent products to help with the immediate needs of my family: a mineral salts deodorant stone and a bag of soap nuts.

I'll start with the deodorant stone.   This little white stick was quite honestly the best natural deodorant I've tried!  I simply wet the stone, and apply to my underarms after my shower.  It works very well, keeps me clean and odor free until I get back into the shower.  This is not to say I don't sweat, because certainly I do, however I do not worry about sweating.  That's a natural reaction of the body and who am I to interfere with it?  What I do not want is being all smelly after playing with my kids outside, and Green Virgin Products' mineral salts deodorant stone is just perfect for that! My older boys are also starting to get to where they need some deodorant from time to time, and I do NOT want to start them so young with all the toxins in commercial deodorants, well ideally I don't want them filled with toxins at all but that's not my decision once they are grown up.  I have been using the product for about 3 weeks now, and have yet to find it has failed me, nor does the stone look as though it has shrunk at all.  I think this one little stone will last me a year or more easily!  You can purchase the stone at Green Virgin Products by clicking any of the links above, and the stone retails for $5.99.  Seriously, you tell me where you will get a year's supply of deodorant for just $5.99?  What a great deal, and even better is that it's all natural, non-toxic, Eco-friendly, and leaves no residue on your skin or clothes!  That's right ladies, no more white lines on your clothes, no more little gummy balls of deodorant left over from the morning's application, and no icky feeling on your skin after application!

The second product that I tried was the Soap Nuts, which are a dried, de-seeded berry from the Chinese Soap Berry Tree, these berries have a high saponin content which is a natural surfactant (the active ingredient in detergents).  The Soap Nuts are hypoallergenic, all-natural, Eco-friendly, organic, AND work in all temperatures of water!  I have used them to wash my towels in hot water, my delicates in cold water, and even just our regular warm water washes for our everyday laundry and every load has come out clean, and soft without any additional additives!  Yup, you read that correctly, no fabric softener, no vinegar, no nothing except 3-4 soap nuts in the little bag!  I was also able to wash 3 loads of laundry with the same little bag of soap nuts, can you do that with your laundry detergent? Now soap nuts have many other uses besides laundry, I threw a few into the silverware basket of my dishwasher, and then ran a full load of dishes - the dishes came out sparkling and there was nothing else added except a vinegar rinse! Of course the soap nuts are good for more than just dishes and laundry they can also be made into liquid soap for any number of uses!

After making boiling several soap nuts in water for a few minutes, I used the resulting liquid (once cool) to wash our 7.5 month old puppy who decided that rolling in mud would be fun.  Not only was she clean, but her fur was soft, and she was not itchy at all like she is after a trip to the doggie day spa for a bath and pedicure.  I also used this liquid soap in a bucket of hot water to mop the kitchen and batroom floors, I was very pleased with how clean they were, without any sticky residue and with no need for rinsing.  After seeing how well it did on these tasks I decided to mix a few drops of essential oil into the liquid soap and use it to make my kids a bubble bath.  It makes great big gobs of suds, and the boys had tons of fun.  It didn't irritate their skin, and they enjoyed being able to have a bubble bath for the first time in months.  This liquid soap does not contain preservatives so it will spoil after a few days, so I recommend only making a little at a time, and storing it in the refrigerator to extend it's life a bit.

I simply can not say enough good things about Green Virgin Products!  They have a great selection of products, which are all on my list to try, and I am seriously in LOVE with the soap nuts and mineral stick deodorant!

Would you like to win your own prize pack?  Green Virgin Products is offering one lucky reader a prize pack containing one Kilo pack of soap nuts, and two Mineral Stick Deodorant Stones, don't forget to stop by their facebook page and thank them for the awesome giveaway!

Natural cleaners

One thing that I have been asked by many people is what I use to clean with since I'm against chemicals.  Well I have several options for you.

My favorite cleaner is made by Young Living and it's called Thieves Household Cleaner.  I buy it in a 14.4 ounce concentrate and it lasts me several months of daily cleaning.  It is non-toxic, safe for use around children and pets, and I don't have to worry that my toddler will get into it.  Plus it smells good, reminds me of cinnamon and oranges. :) If you'd like to get some, please visit me here for more information on that.

Of course I do also have some more readily available options.  For glass and all purpose cleaner, plain white vinegar in a spray bottle works great just wipe with newspaper for nice clear glass!  Don't like the smell of vinegar?  Well then, try soaking orange, lemon, lime, or grapefruit (or any combination of) peels in your glass jar filled with vinegar for a few days to a week, and you'll have lovely citrus scented vinegar.

Want a germ killing cleaner that gives you peace of mind?  Try Vodka, yup just the cheap stuff here though.  You can even soak the citrus peels in vodka to get a citrus scent in your cleaner.  Then just use a spray bottle to spray the counters or floors and wipe.

Need to clean your toilet bowl?  That's easy!  Pour in some white vinegar, then add baking soda.  Let the fizz settle and then just brush and flush.  My big boys think this is great fun! Another great toilet cleaner is simple hydrogen peroxide, just pour in 1/2-1 cup and let it set for 5-10 minutes then brush and flush.

Cleaning carpets more your need, well then just add plain vinegar to your machine or add in a few drops of essential oil for scent.  Clean as usual and watch as your carpets are restored to their lovely color in no time at all!  The vinegar scent can be overwhelming, but with open windows it's not an issue and once the carpet is dry there's no smell left.

What about room fresheners, those are easy too.  Just pick yourself up a few travel size spritzer bottles, though glass is best plastic will work in a pinch.  Just put a few drops of essential oil (I use Young Living exclusively because I know it's safe and high quality) into a couple ounces of purified water.  Carpet freshener, same thing only instead of water I use baking soda in a shaker canister with a few drops of essential oil.  Let it set for 5 minutes or so and then vacuum up as you usually would.

Something gooey stuck on your counter?  Use baking soda and warm water to create an abrasive paste to help loosen the mess and then just wipe it away with a towel or sponge.

Speaking of those sponges, how do I keep them fresh and clean?  Well, when I'm done with them I rinse thoroughly, and then soak it in bit of vinegar, wring it out and let it dry.  Smells clean every time I use it!

Of course there are MANY great chemical free, green cleaners out on the market and I've used some of them and still do use some of them, but I wanted this to be a way to clean on the cheap.  I will be discussing some of those other cleaners another time, but for now I'll just recap with a list of common household things that can be used for cleaners.

Vinegar - all purpose including glass (soak citrus peels in the vinegar for a more citrus-y, less overpowering scent), also works great in mop water!

Baking Soda - Combined with vinegar makes a great toilet cleaner, as well as disposal cleaner, and drain un-clogger.  Also works great as an abrasive for those sticky messes.  Good carpet deodorizer as well.

Vodka - all purpose cleaner, and disinfectant.  Can soak citrus in this as well to give a more desirable aroma.

Spray bottles, large and small

Labels or Permanent Marker

Essential Oils for scent

Birbitt thinks that green cleaning can be cheap and easy.  The cabinet under my sink has never been cleaner or less cluttered!

Milk Maid

We have been buying soy milk as of late, because my husband does not do well with dairy and all of our boys seem to have a bit of eczema, which is most often caused by dairy.  Well, let me tell you that soy milk is expensive around here it's a bargain if we find soy milk for less than 3.00 a half gallon.  After much research online, I discovered that soy milk can be made at home and that is was fairly simple.  So I've made it a few times at this point and I thought I'd blog about the process and show some pictures so you can see how easy it is as well!

Step 1 is to purchase all your ingredients.  I am using: dried, organic soy beans, brown rice syrup, homemade vanilla extract, and water (I buy filtered water at a water store).

You will also need clean GLASS containers!  I can not stress enough that you need to use glass, plastic is too difficult to clean and sanitize, so please, please, please use glass!  I am actually using some beautiful glass bottles that once contained an organic lemonade.  The jars are simply beautiful and because they are glass with a metal lid they are super easy to clean and I even boiled them to sanitize!

Step 2 is to soak your soy beans.  The basic recipe calls for 1/2 cup of dry soy beans soaked in water for 12-24 hours.  I personally found that soaking them longer yielded more milk!  Here are some before and after photos of the soaked soybeans.  Also I find that changing the water at least twice during the soaking offers better flavor to the milk.

Step 3: Take your soaked beans and add them to your blender or food processor with 2 cups of water (my food processor is small, and so I had to do this in two batches).  Turn your processor on and blend it for 2 minutes, scraping your bowl down once halfway through.

This mixture will be frothy, foamy, and a bit chunky. Though your chunks need to be VERY small!

Up until now I have been showing measurements for just one recipe, however I actually made 4 times the basic recipe to avoid making milk daily.  So from now on I will give you the single recipe measurements, but what you see in pictures will be much larger than your actual results.

Step 4: Place your soy and water puree, along with an additional cup of water into a pot a bit larger than you think you need, as it will foam up!  For a regular recipe you could probably get away with a 2 quart saucepan, I am using a large stock pot because again I am making 4 TIMES the basic recipe!  So your soy is in a large pot and you now need to bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.

As you can see there will be quite a bit of foam on top of your milk.  It is a good idea at this point to have a cup of cold water on hand in case the foam gets out of control, if you don't need it you can add it to the pot after it comes to a full boil. Be sure to add this water into your pot once it comes to a boil if you didn't need it to control foam.

Step 5: Once your mixture comes to a full boil, back the heat down to medium - medium low and allow it to simmer for 20 minutes.  Set your timer because this is crucial, 20 minutes.  Stirring occasionally to prevent the Okara from sticking.  During this time a thin layer of film may form, do not stir that into your milk, just skim it off!

Step 6: Pour your simmered milk into a cheese cloth (or towel) lined strainer/colander over a container large enough to hold your finished milk.  Allow this to drain and cool for 20 minutes (or more if it's still too hot).

Step 7: Pull up your corners and squeeze out the rest of your milk.  I switched to another pot at this point just so you could see how much milk I got out of the squeezing process.

See how much extra milk was still in that puree?

Step 8: Sweeten and flavor your milk if desired, I am using 1 Tablespoon of brown rice syrup, and 1 teaspoon of home made vanilla extract.  Then pour your milk into your GLASS containers.

And now you can refrigerate your freshly made, preservative free soy milk and enjoy as you please.  It will stay fresh in your refrigerator for 3 days, I wouldn't try and keep it much beyond that because remember it is a fresh product and there are no preservatives!

My finished milk.  Isn't it pretty?  My family loves this fresh milk, and to us all it tastes so much better than the store bought containers of milk.  Oh, and the even better part?  When I figured it all out, to make 3 liters of milk it only costs me $1.74!  That is a savings of nearly half the cost of store bought containers that also contain refined sugar, preservatives and sometimes even artificial flavors!

OK!  So for those of you who prefer a simple recipe I'm going to post that below so that you don't have to filter through my step by step photo tutorial.

Homemade soy milk:

1/2 cup dry organic soybeans
4 cups of water
1 Tablespoon brown rice syrup, honey, or any sweetener of your choice (you can also omit this if you like)
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (again optional)

Soak your soybeans for 12 -24 hours, the longer you soak them the more milk you will get!  Remember to change the water twice during the soaking process!

After soaking your beans drain them and put them in your blender or food processor along with 2 cups of water and whip it around for 2 minutes.  Scrape your container down halfway through the pureeing.

Put this mixture in a large pot with another cup of water.  Turn it on medium high heat and bring it to a boil.  If it threatens to boil over add a cup of cold water to stop this, if it doesn't try to boil over add the cup of water after it comes to a boil.

Reduce the heat to medium - medium low and simmer for 20 minutes.

Set a colander/strainer over a medium pot or stainless steel bowl and line the colander with cheese cloth, or a clean cotton dish towel.  Pour the simmered mixture over this and allow it to drain and cool for at least 20 minutes or until it is cool enough to handle.

Bring up the corners of the towel and squeeze any excess milk from the Okara (that's the ground soybean that is left after milk making, and it is edible and full of protein!) and then sweeten and flavor your milk if desired.  Pour your milk into clean glass containers and refrigerate for up to 3 days!

Birbitt thinks that making soy milk is fun, and nutritious!  What more could a mama want for her children?

Sickness, Insomnia, and a touch of...

The past week in our home has been a week of sickness. It began when B got a cough, just a cough, so I figure no big deal, we'll handle it, in our own "strange" way. Well he got better almost overnight, so I thought we were in the clear. I was wrong, by Friday S was down for the count, he was miserable the poor guy spent all of Friday laying around the house (wherever the people were) and dozing in and out. Saturday Twiggles began to show signs of illness, so again treat in our own little way. Sunday he was MISERABLE! and the whole house knew it, he made sure of it. He spent all of Sunday sleeping on and off, eating almost nothing (the sum total of his food intake for the day is less than what he normally eats in one snack) and drinking only slightly more than he ate. Monday he began to drink much more, and eat a little more, and he was more active.

This whole time I'm filling the members of this household with orange juice as fast as I can, and spraying EVERYTHING with Tea Tree Oil and water (Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, pretty much anti anything you don't want in your house) as much as possible to prevent the spread of sickness. Now come Tuesday everyone is back to normal, I thought, then Wednesday I come down sick, my head is in one place, my body in another, and I am just not right. I slept on and off Wednesday, while my dearest hubby cared for the children and tended to the house (oh how I love that man!). Here it is now Thursday morning at 4am and what am I doing?

I am on the computer of course because I now can not sleep thanks to the several naps I took Wednesday. I am on the computer blogging and searching. What am I searching for you ask? I am searching for books, yup books. Big suprise right? A homeschooler who is searching for books, that just never happens right? (note the sarcasm) Well I am not searching for just any books, I am searching for the books of my childhood, books that I enjoyed so much I want to share with my children, and you know what they are *gasp* educational! I was and still am an avid reader as a child, devouring any book placed in front of me. I always had a love of all things mystery when it came to fiction books, but then I also loved non-fiction as well, mostly science and space. So I am sitting up late into the night or early into the morning, depending on your perspective, searching for books from my childhood book shelf. If only I had the forsight to have kept those books, but as I got older I donated the outgrown, or unwanted books to local charities so that other children would have books to read and now I must search to find the best loved books once again to share with my children.

Care to share some of your favorite books?

Double duty

As I posted earlier, I decided that this year I was going to do a bunch of handmade gifts this year for Christmas. We did not solely make gifts, but I did considerably reduce the number of "Made in China" tags that were going to be brought into our home. Part of my motivation for this was to be frugal, and part was to avoid the endless clutter that always happens at Christmas.

I will be posting some of the gifts that I made here, and this is the first of those posts. I have been having difficulty lately in teaching my young boys the need for modesty when getting out of the bath. They like to get out of the tub, dry off in the towel, leave the towel on the floor, and then come out and ask me questions before going to their room and putting on their PJ's. Now I realize that as a parent I can continually tell them not to do that, and I can explain why, and I can even apply a consequence if they disobey, however I don't think in this case a consequence is needed. Instead I asked myself what tools I could give them to help them to remember.

So to both fulfill that need as well as my need to reduce waste, and clutter I decided that I would make them each a bath robe. Now because they are so close in age I aim to keep gifts similar or identical wherever possible. So I purchased red flannel and cream bias tape for both robes. I used a scrap piece of the flannel to try my hand at machine embroidery, which I failed at doing. So to distinguish one from the other I used the remains of some gold puff paint that was leftover from a previous project. Here are the results, and they are a hit with the children. They keep them hung up on the bathroom door so they are always convenient when they get out of the bath.

What do you think? Both functional and fun? These were a bit tricky in spots, but the came out well I think.
